RGM Kleemann Supercharged Merc SLS at Monte Casino

Kleemann’s history goes back to 1985 when the company was founded in Farum, close to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Despite the company’s relative youthfulness, its history is captivating and interesting, from its first days as a two-man company to its present stance as one of the world leaders in its field.

In 1985 two cars enthusiasts turned their passion into their living when they established a company that specialized in the design and manufacture of exclusive tuning and styling solutions for Mercedes-Benz cars. In 1988 the construction of the first Kleemann Kompressor System began for a select group of customers. This was the beginning of a new era: the development of Kompressor systems as the most effective tuning solution for Mercedes-Benz.

In 1994, with the entry of a joint owner, Kleemann A/S began to mass-produce its highly effective Kompressor systems. Constant development and use of advanced technology had given the company the know-how and expertise needed.
Kleemann can now offer a comprehensive line of tuning as well as styling products for Mercedes-Benz and AMG owners. The common thread is unparalleled quality and elegance.

MERC C63

RGMotorsport prides itself in building special performance vehicles to suit our customers’ needs and in this case we believe your vehicle will suit the category of one of South Africa’s extreme M-B C63s, both in performance and looks.

An RGM-Kleemann bolt-on Roots-type chargecooled superchargerd installation, including our RGM Techniflow 76mm stainless steel, mandrel bent and TIG welded performance exhaust system will deliver in the region of 560kW and 870Nm. This installation could be done in 3-4 weeks, once we have received the components.

For over two decades, Kleemann has manufactured supercharger tuning kits exclusively for Mercedes-Benz engines. Today, intensive research and development as well as the use of cutting-edge technology has turned Kleemann into one of the world’s leading manufacturer of supercharger tuning solutions for Mercedes-Benz cars.

M156/M159 V8 AMG Supercharger kit

This supercharger system is designed for the normally-aspirated M156 6.2 litre V8 engine in the early Mercedes-Benz 63 AMG cars and also for the M159 6.2 litre V8 engine in the SLS AMG.

Machined from billet aluminium, each part from the smallest pulley to the largest plenum chamber ismaster-crafted on state-of-the-art CNC machines to ensure the highest quality, fitment and finish. Keeping with motorsport tradition, all joining parts of the inlet system, manifold and intercooler employ captive O-rings rather than gaskets and sealants for consistent sealing and maximum reliability. Every finished unit is hand-inspected, pressure tested (both the manifold and the intercooler) and scrutinised for quality before it’s allowed to leave the production line for final packaging.

We have chosen the Magnuson TVS2300 positive displacement supercharger for numerous reasons. Magnuson is an OEM supplier to many automotive manufacturers which means all of their superchargers are of very high quality and endure thousands of hours of bench and real world testing. Unlike screw-type superchargers, which compress air internally leading to an increase in both discharge temperatures and parasitic drive loss, the TVS2300 maintains consistently low discharge temperatures and drive losses across its entire operating range. Magnuson superchargers are internally oiled using synthetic lubricants designed for long service life. Our supercharger kits for the M156 and M156 Mercedes-Benz AMG engines employs a large internal supercharger bypass valve to reduce parasitic drive load, keep throttle inlet temperatures low and increase fuel efficiency.

Kleemann pioneered the integration of intercooler cores within the intake manifold in our M112 and M113 supercharger kits and we have continued this superior design tradition with our M156 and M159 supercharger system. The bar and plate style intercooler core is integrated into the intake plenum chamber and an electronic water pump circulates the coolant through an independent radiator mounted behind the lower front grille. An overflow reservoir is installed to both increase intercooler capacity and simplify the bleeding procedure. These design features ensure consistently low intake temperatures and the intercooler system has been tested to maintain extremely efficient operation over 600kW.

We have designed a unique drive system with utmost reliability in mind. Included with our supercharger system is a dual-plane crankshaft pulley which is CNC-machined from billet aircraft quality aluminium. All engine accessories maintain their single, 6-rib drive belt and factory rotational speeds while the supercharger gets its own, independent 8-rib drive plane for maximum reliability and power transmission. This drive system integrates its own idler pulleys and a zero maintenance dynamic belt tensioner.

The key to efficient and reliable operation lies in advanced engine management control, and our M156/M159 supercharger system integrates the factory ME9.7 engine management system using extensively developed and tested proprietary software. Each individual cylinder is mapped for optimal ignition timing and fuel delivery. Low boost pressure together with precisely mapped ignition timing ensures low engine temperatures, high efficiency and a high level of reliability. The factory drive by wire system is mapped to ensure factory drivability, smoothness and a broad, flat torque curve. Through advanced software mapping, Kleemann has the ability to fully integrate all of the factory driveline protection features, such as torque management for gearbox/driveline reliability, detonation protection using the factory knock sensor system and safeguards against excessive inlet temperatures. Our expert knowledge of engine management software ensures safe, smooth and reliable operation across all engine speeds and ambient conditions.

The supercharger develops 0.4 bar in boost pressure, resulting in a power increase from 115-190kW and 220-310Nm depending on the engine type and additional tuning components like exhaust headers and flow optimized cylinder heads.

The Kleemann supercharger system for AMG 63 cars and the SLS AMG has been tested and verified safe with all AMG variants of the 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission, including the MCT 7G.

Manufacturing and installation time

These kits take approximately four weeks to arrive in South Africa and RGMotorsport would require the vehicle for three weeks. This installation period is calculated using the manufacturer input and is subject to change. According to the supplier the engine electronics will be upgraded by sending the vehicles ECU to Denmark and any further tuning will be totally supported by Kleemann if required. We recommend that a Unichip be fitted in order to optimize the vehicle supercharger mapping to suit our climate and conditions.

Kleemann assures us that the conversion will produce 560kW and will have a top speed of 353km/h...

 

RGM KLEEMANN SLS

RGM-Kleemann 70mm stainless steel performance exhaust system including race catalytic convertors as well as sound variation (flaps in the exhaust that either make the exhaust system by- pass the rear silencers or use it) mode activated by remote control.

The Kleemann supercharger system for AMG 63 cars and the SLS AMG has been tested and verified safe with all AMG variants of the 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission, including the MCT 7G.

Our supercharger kit for this Mercedes-Benz engine was introduced in 2000, and over the years, we have continuously improved on its original design in order to offer the most efficient, powerful, simple and safe engine tuning solution for all Mercedes-Benz cars with the normally aspirated 430, 500 and 55 AMG engines, type M113.

The M113 supercharger kit consists of a Roots type MP112 supercharger from Magnuson, who are renowned for their efficient, durable and thoroughly tested supercharger units. The supercharger is fitted to a cast alloy intake manifold with an integrated air-to-water intercooler, and for many years, it was the only known system to combine the intake manifold, supercharger and intercooler into one integral unit. For efficient cooling, the coolant is circulated through the independent radiator by an electronic pump, and the recent addition of an overflow reservoir both increases the intercooler capacity and also simplifies the installation (bleeding) procedure.

This supercharger kit develops boost (0.4-0.6 bar depending on the specific application/engine) at very low engine revs, and maintains boost consistently throughout the rev range. As a result, the engine maintains a characteristically smooth power band with no peaks or valleys – just immediate high power on demand without any hesitation. The power increase ranges from 150-200 hp and 150-200Nm depending on the engine size and additional tuning components like exhaust headers, camshafts, flow optimized cylinder heads etc.

Manufacturing and installation time

The kit would take approximately 4 weeks to arrive in South Africa and RGMotorsport would require the vehicle for 3 weeks for this installation, the installation period is calculated using Kleemann’s input and is subject to change should it be required. Part of this supercharger installation procedure isto send the ECU (electronic control unit) to Kleemann Denmark for a software upgrade that will also suit our Southern African climate and condition.
